The Daredevil Christopher Wright

September 17, 2010

Following on from two self-produced EPs, THE DAREDEVIL CHRISTOPHER WRIGHT released his debut album, In Deference To A Broken Back, in 2009. The sounds on this record surprise you when you least expect it and its origins seem to be ever-changing, giving the listener a myriad of paths to explore.

We have not heard an album like theirs for a very long time; combining music as simultaneously subtle and lavish, with beautiful lyrics weighed down with sadness yet desperate to explode with joy, with vocal qualities particularly rare in the indie pop world.

Brothers Jon and Jason Sunde and their friend Jesse Eddington come from Wisconsin and compose daring songs so full of life that they make you want to believe in better days. Just before we welcomed autumn in with open arms, THE DAREDEVIL CHRISTOPHER WRIGHT was the ideal group to close the third summer season of concerts at 7ème Ciel.

As a prelude to the concert, 7ème Ciel opened its doors to LESLIE BOUCHET, a student at the Conservatoire National Supérieur d'Art Dramatique of Paris and ADRIEN LEROY, producer and former student of the Conservatoire d'Art Dramatique d'Orléans. These two actors performed Lux in Tenebris, an early, short BERTOLT BRECHT play.

A critique of a style of capitalism which forbids any form of philanthropy, the light of the title 'the light in the darkness' is the powerful light that Paduk installs in a street containing a brothel. It is to scare away the clients and to highlight his own supposedly philanthropic institution, the goal of which is to warn people against the risks linked to prostitution. In reality, we witness the struggle of one commercial business – Paduk's organisation – against another – Madame Hogge's brothel – and the shift of capital from one to the other.

We played the most amazing balcony show in Paris the other night. It overlooked a part of Paris called Montmartre. Amazing! Two actors opened the night doing a piece by BERTOLT BRECHT. I think they did well, however I don't speak French so I had trouble following the story. I was informed by one of the actors afterward, having confessed that I didn't really know what was going on, that the piece was basically about anti-capitalism. I was later informed by one of our French friends that even though he speaks the language, he couldn't follow all that was going on. My impression of Brecht, is that he is a bit heady.... It was totally great to pair theater with music. I've been talking to my friend Toby about that for years.

There were about 50 people who crammed onto a balcony with an amazing view of the Sacré Coeur basilica. It was an amazing night. Also, we met this band called ARLT who we just found out are our label mates. Check out their stuff. They're really lovely people and we've been listening to their album a lot in the van.
